The Amercian Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) midgets returned to action on the Bridgeport Speedway quarter mile for the first time since June of 2011. With one win to his credit this season, Collegeville, PA driver, Alex Bright was looking forward to the return to the Logan Township Speedway where he won his very first ARDC midget feature in May of 2011 – in just his second season of ARDC competition.
It was a reconfigured quarter mile track that awaited the wingless midgets with banking increased earlier this season.
After running some experimental lines during his qualifying event, Bright drew the pole for the start of the twenty-five lap feature event. “I was kind of lucky,” Bright related. “By the time I drew, most of the high numbers were already taken.”
Bright took the green at the start but immediately was pressured by 2013 ARDC Champion, Trevor Kobylarz. Bright led the first six laps but when he moved up the track on lap seven, it was the opportunity that Kobylarz was looking for as he shot into the lead. Kobylarz led through the half way point of the race with Bright keeping pace with the leader. Brenden Bright ran in third followed by Bruce Buckwalter, Jr. and current ARDC point leader, Steven Drevicki.
The leaders caught up to the back of the pack and had to negotiate their way around the lapped traffic. As the leaders approached the car of Austin Burke, Kobylarz elected the inside while Bright went to the outside. Bright took the lead as Kobylarz made his way around Burke. As Kobylarz pressed to retake the lead on the next circuit, he lost the handle on his Cafe Waldorf #1, bringing out the caution on lap fifteen.
Bright raced the distance for this second win of the season with Brenden Bright taking second. Drevicki took over third with five to go to finish ahead of Bruce Buckwalter, Jr. Nick Wean rounded out the top five.
2013 Bridgeport Champion, Ryan Watt, did double duty on Saturday night in both the Big Block Modifieds and the midgets. Watt drove Fred Schell’s #75 to a sixth place finish on the quarter mile.
Heat races were won by Brian Gilmore, John Barnett, Jr. and Drevicki.
ARDC returns to the high banks of the Grandview Speedway for another Open Wheel Spectacular with the Hilborn TSRS 305 Sprint Cars on Sunday, July 20th.
