Gargiulo Battles A Bright to the Finish for the Win
After a six year absence, PJ Gargiulo drove into Victory Lane after winning the twenty lap Amercan Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) feature event at the New Egypt Speedway. Gargiulo led the race from the green flag to the checkered even though the lead was hotly contested throughout the main event.
Gargiulo and Bruce Buckwalter Jr. led the starting field to the wave of the green flag in ARDC’s second New Egypt appearance of the season. Gargiulo immediately jumped out in front while Steven Drevicki and Brenden Bright battled their way into second and third. Buckwalter and Ryan Greth completed the top five in the running order in the early going as Gargiulo put together a lead of several car lengths.
Buckwalter made a move past Brenden Bright to take over third as the field raced to the half way mark. Alex Bright had just cracked the top five as he overtook Greth for the fifth position.
The first caution of the race flew on lap eleven for 2013 ARDC Champion, Trevor Kobylarz in turn two. Kobylarz restarted at the rear and the field realigned for the restart.
One lap was scored before the caution waved again but not before Alex Bright had raced his way to third and began to pressure Drevicki for the runner-up position. It was a three way race for the lead as Gargiulo had Bright to his inside and Drevicki looking at the high line as the laps counted down.
The red flag was needed for a multi car incident in turn four that saw 2011 ARDC Champion, Drew Heistand get upside down. Heistand exited the car and caught a ride back to the pit area in the ambulance. Jim Radney’s run ended with this incident as did Davey Sammons first ARDC ride as Sammons substituted for owner/driver, Greg Fitzpatrick.
Gargiulo had plenty of time under the red flag to think about what lay ahead of him. With Alex Bright on his rear bumper, Gargiulo hit all of his marks on the green, white, checkered finish and drove to his second career win in ARDC competition. Alex Bright followed Gargiulo across the line with Drevicki finishing third. Ryan Greth finished fourth while some late race moves by Nick Wean landed him a fifth place finish.
Heats were won by Alex & Brenden Bright and Drevicki.
ARDC has a two race weekend coming up for the Memorial Holiday with a race at the Big Diamond Speedway on Friday night and then the Thunder on the Hill show at the Grandview Speedway on Sunday.
